Before you go,
understand the place.

Trujillo, founded in 1525 and sacked several times by pirates, keeps the Santa Bárbara Fortress in its historic centre, according to the IHAH.

Best time to go
According to Canada, the rainy season runs from May to November and can cause flooding and landslides, and the hurricane season from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It is an approximate national pattern, not a climate record for each region or a guarantee for the islands. Follow COPECO's alerts.
Getting there
This guide does not calculate road routes or travel times and offers no arrival points. To travel by road from Tegucigalpa to Trujillo, Canada advises taking the RN39 via Gualaco, San Esteban and Bonito Oriental rather than the RN41 via Salamá and Sabá. Canada also advises against non-essential travel to the department of Olancho, and the United Kingdom reports attacks on the roads from Gualaco to San Esteban and from Olancho via Salamá to Sabá. According to La Prensa (article updated 9 September 2026), buses to Tocoa and Trujillo leave from the Gran Central terminal in San Pedro Sula.

A colonial defensive fortress in Trujillo's historic centre, declared a National Historic Monument and Heritage Site in 1990 and run by the IHAH since 1997, according to the IHAH. It houses a museum on the history, culture and traditions of the northeast coast, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Status not confirmed: in an inspection on 30 April 2025, the Public Prosecutor's Office found roof damage in the former dormitories, used as storerooms, and that the old kitchen works as an exhibition room on Garífuna culture; no later IHAH source on visiting conditions was read, and XplorHonduras's page (April 2026) does not cite its source. Practical tips

  1. The IHAH page consulted gives no hours or fees for the fortress: confirm them there.
  2. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office (April 2025), part of the building had roof damage and the IHAH had budgeted its restoration.
  3. Canada exempts the city of Trujillo from its advice on Colón; the rest of the department is advised against except for essential travel.

Safety and precautions

  • Canada advises against non-essential travel to the department of Colón, except the city of Trujillo, and mentions roadblocks and violent incidents linked to land disputes, mostly in the Aguán valley and on the north coast near Trujillo.
  • The United Kingdom warns of the risk of criminal attacks and carjackings in and around Tela, La Ceiba, Trujillo and El Progreso, and advises care on beaches in the north coast towns after dark.
  • The US Department of State advises reconsidering travel to Honduras because of crime and terrorism (level 3, advisory of 25 August 2026) and advises against travel to the department of Gracias a Dios (level 4).
  • According to state television TNH (20 September 2026), the National Defence and Security Council decided on 18 September not to apply a new state of exception; Honduran media date the end of the regime begun in December 2022 to 26 January 2026. The United States advisory of 25 August 2026 still described it as in force in 226 of the 298 municipalities. This guide does not confirm the current situation. Canada notes that the authorities periodically declare states of exception: always carry ID and follow the authorities' instructions at checkpoints.
