Comayagua, the old colonial capital, keeps in its historic centre the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, with its weight-driven clock, and the church of La Merced, considered the oldest in Honduras, according to La Prensa.

According to Canada, the rainy season runs from May to November and can cause flooding and landslides, and the hurricane season from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. Getting there
This guide does not calculate road routes or travel times and offers no arrival points. According to La Prensa (article updated 9 September 2026), buses between San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa stop in Comayagua, and Transportes Los Libertenos runs from San Pedro Sula to Comayagua from about 6:00 a.m. Palmerola airport's website advertises official fixed-fare taxis to Comayagua and Tegucigalpa.

    Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

    A colonial cathedral built between 1650 and 1715. Its tower holds a weight-and-gear clock that, according to La Prensa, is of Arab origin (around the year 1100) and the oldest in the world; Visit Honduras presents it as one of the oldest in the Americas.

    A museum founded in 1940 and run by the IHAH since the 1970s, with ten rooms on the Comayagua valley: palaeontology, archaeology, colonial and republican objects and intangible heritage, according to the IHAH. Visit Honduras places it in Honduras's first presidential house and highlights the machinery of the first printing press in Central America.

  1. The museum's price table comes from the Municipality of Comayagua and the IHAH page consulted does not confirm it: check with the IHAH, which runs it.
  2. During Holy Week, parishioners and artists make sawdust carpets in the streets of the historic centre (La Prensa, April 2025); in 2026 rain spoiled several of them, according to El Heraldo. It is not a guaranteed calendar.
  3. None of the sources read publishes the conditions for climbing the cathedral's clock tower.

Safety and precautions

  • Spain (update of 12 May 2026) rates insecurity in Honduras as very high, advises against travelling by road at night and rates Copán Ruinas, Lake Yojoa and the Bay Islands as medium risk. It reports robberies of cars and buses on the road sections linking the El Florido and Agua Caliente crossings with Guatemala City, advises not to drive them after dusk and advises against stopping in La Entrada, Santa Rita and El Paraíso (Copán).
  • The US Department of State advises reconsidering travel to Honduras because of crime and terrorism (level 3, advisory of 25 August 2026) and advises against travel to the department of Gracias a Dios (level 4).
  • According to state television TNH (20 September 2026), the National Defence and Security Council decided on 18 September not to apply a new state of exception; Honduran media date the end of the regime begun in December 2022 to 26 January 2026. The United States advisory of 25 August 2026 still described it as in force in 226 of the 298 municipalities. This guide does not confirm the current situation. Canada notes that the authorities periodically declare states of exception: always carry ID and follow the authorities' instructions at checkpoints.
