Before you go,
understand the place.

Copán Ruinas brings together the ceremonial centre of the Maya city of Copán, with the Hieroglyphic Stairway, the Las Sepulturas residential compound and two IHAH museums: the Sculpture Museum, inside the park, and the Museum of Maya Archaeology, in town.

Best time to go
According to Canada, the rainy season runs from May to November and can cause flooding and landslides, and the hurricane season from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It is an approximate national pattern, not a climate record for each region or a guarantee for the islands. Follow COPECO's alerts.
Getting there
This guide does not calculate road routes or travel times and offers no arrival points. According to the IHAH, the Archaeological Park lies on the CA-4 highway, 1 km before the town of Copán Ruinas, and the Museum of Mayan Archaeology is in the town centre. According to Macaw Mountain, the park is 10 minutes by vehicle from the central square. La Prensa (article updated 9 September 2026) mentions companies that run from San Pedro Sula to Copán Ruinas, without naming them. Canada says the El Florido border crossing closes daily from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Spain advises against road travel at night (read the safety advice).
