Before you go,
understand the place.

The canal is best seen at its locks. Miraflores, on the Pacific side, has terraces, a museum and an IMAX film. Agua Clara, near Colón, faces the Neopanamax locks of the expansion. Both centers are run by ACP and publish separate fees for residents and non-residents.

Best time to go
The dry season runs from late December to early May and the wet season from May to December (Gamboa Rainforest Reserve). For birding, the dry season (mid-December to mid-April) adds migrant species. In the wet season, go out early because rain usually falls in the afternoon (Birding Panama). In autumn the raptor migration passes over, visible from the Canopy Tower in Soberanía and from Ancón Hill. October and November bring heavy rain with a risk of flash floods and landslides (UK FCDO). Ships transit year-round.
Getting there
From Panama City, head toward Albrook and take Avenida Omar Torrijos, which passes Miraflores, Pedro Miguel, Summit Park and Soberanía on the way to Gamboa. Gamboa is about 18.6 miles (about 30 km) from downtown (Gamboa Rainforest Reserve). Miraflores is about 15 minutes from downtown by car (Visit Panamá); a taxi or Uber costs about US$12–15 each way (tour operator Canal Panama Tours' blog, April 2026). Agua Clara, in Colón, is an hour's drive (Visit Panamá). By bus, buses from Albrook terminal toward Gamboa and Chilibre stop in front of the Soberanía park office (Visit Panamá); pay with a MiBus or Rapipass card (Wikivoyage). Moovit lists MiBus route C790 (Albrook–Summit Park–Gamboa), but its timetable was not confirmed by an official source. Train: no regular passenger service could be confirmed for 2026; the Panama Canal Railway only announced Saturday rides from Corozal in February 2025. For the Emberá communities, go via La Cabima to Puerto Corotú on Lake Alajuela (one hour), then by dugout canoe.

Practical tips

  1. Check ship traffic on ACP's webcams before going to Miraflores; there can be hours without ships between transits.
  2. Pay Soberanía or Chagres entry online on MiAmbiente's portal (reservasap.miambiente.gob.pa) and carry the receipt; check the accepted payment methods there.
  3. Barro Colorado and El Charco trail require advance booking; El Charco at least 72 hours ahead.
  4. On Gatún Lake trips, do not feed the monkeys and choose operators that don't either.
  5. In Emberá communities, ask before photographing people and buy crafts directly.
  6. Tour prices come from private operators and change; Ancon Expeditions raises its partial-transit price on 1 Dec 2026.

Safety and precautions

  • Pipeline Road is walked on foot, at your own risk, staying on the road (MiAmbiente, 2026).
  • MiAmbiente announced the temporary closure of Camino de Cruces National Park on 12 August 2026 after trees fell. Its current status has not been confirmed (checked October 2026); before visiting, confirm with MiAmbiente that access is authorised and do not enter if the closure remains in place.
  • From June to November there can be heavy rain, flash floods and landslides; October and November are the wettest months (FCDO). Do not cross swollen streams.
  • The UK government advises using only ride-hailing apps or hotel-arranged transport, as taxis can be in poor condition, and urges caution in Colón city, where protests may be particularly large.
  • Do not feed or touch wildlife. In August 2022, MiAmbiente published a ban on feeding wildlife at El Charco. According to Metro Libre (23 January 2025), a forum organised by MiAmbiente explained that feeding the Gatún Lake monkeys alters their diet and the ecosystem's balance.
