Masaya gathers Masaya Volcano National Park, run by MARENA, and Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve, both with unconfirmed status. MARENA reopened the day and night visit at the Plaza Oviedo lookout in July 2025, but in December 2025 the press reported that the authorities reiterated the restriction on access to Plaza Oviedo, and no later notice on that access was read.

Best time to go
According to Canada, the rainy season runs from May to November, with October the wettest month, and the hurricane season from mid-May to the end of November on the Pacific and from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It is an approximate national pattern, not a climate record for each region. Follow the civil protection authorities’ instructions.
Getting there
This guide does not calculate road routes or travel times and offers no arrival points. According to INTUR’s National Tourism Map (2021), road access to Laguna de Apoyo leaves from km 37½ of the Masaya–Granada road.

Practical tips

  1. Sources disagree on how long you may stay at the crater rim: one travel guide (July 2026) mentions about 5 minutes and another (September 2026) up to 30 minutes. No official source read sets it.
  2. According to INTUR, MARENA may update the volcano’s fees: confirm them at the entrance.
  3. At Laguna de Apoyo much of the shore is private and motorboats are prohibited, according to a travel guide (July 2026).

Safety and precautions

  • The United States advises travellers to reconsider travel (level 3, advisory reissued on 14 May 2026) due to crime, limited healthcare, wrongful detention and arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
  • According to the United States, Nicaragua has denied entry to or expelled US citizens, particularly people linked to NGOs, universities, churches or the media, and checks their social media.
  • Canada advises a high degree of caution throughout the country (update of 31 August 2026) due to the political situation, the potential for civil unrest and crime.
  • Spain advises extreme caution (update of 26 May 2026).
  • The United Kingdom has no resident embassy in Nicaragua and supports its citizens from San José (Costa Rica).
  • Nicaraguan law bars foreigners from any political activity: taking part in protests or spreading criticism, including on social media, can lead to detention or deportation, according to Canada and the United Kingdom.
  • Use authorised red-plate taxis or radio-dispatched taxis: the United Kingdom warns of express kidnappings in unauthorised taxis.
  • Canada reports frequent petty crime and burglaries in the poor neighbourhoods of several cities, including Managua, Masaya and León, and in tourist areas and bus terminals.
  • According to the press (VosTV, 9 December 2025), INETER issued a preventive alert over rockfalls and cracks in the Santiago crater; the authorities reiterated the restriction on access to Plaza Oviedo, with an 800-metre safety perimeter, and possible low-energy explosions were warned of. No later notice on that access was read.

According to INTUR’s undated page: by day, Nicaraguans C$80 and foreign visitors C$180; at night, Nicaraguans C$185 and foreign visitors C$370. Other 2026 sources give different amounts and no MARENA table was read.

Until what time is Masaya Volcano open?

MARENA announced in July 2025 hours of 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; INTUR, undated, and the press in August 2026 give 7:00 p.m. as closing time.

Is there a fee to enter Laguna de Apoyo?

The sources read publish no fee for the reserve; private clubs on the shore sell day passes, according to a July 2026 travel guide.
