Before you go,
understand the place.

The Corn Islands, in the Caribbean, are two islands, Great Corn and Little Corn, with white-sand beaches and coral reefs for diving and snorkelling; the municipality has been a Protected Land and Seascape since 2021, according to INTUR. Both cards have unconfirmed status: sea connections depend on the weather.

Best time to go
According to Canada, the rainy season runs from May to November, with October the wettest month, and the hurricane season from mid-May to the end of November on the Pacific and from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It is an approximate national pattern, not a climate record for each region. Follow the civil protection authorities’ instructions.
Getting there
This guide does not calculate road routes or travel times and offers no arrival points. La Costeña offers flights from Managua to Corn Island; current operating days and times are unconfirmed in this guide (checked on 6 October 2026). Check the current schedule with the airline before planning connections. The cited information about a possible US$2 per person fee payable in cash at the terminal could not be revalidated in this check. The Bluefields–Big Corn ferry runs on different days depending on the source (Wednesday and Saturday in a 2025 guide; Monday and Thursday at a hotel, in June 2026), and Little Corn is reached by panga from Big Corn, with departures around 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. according to travel guides; these times have not been confirmed with the operators.

Practical tips

  1. In bad weather the ferry and pangas do not run, according to two travel guides (2025–2026): leave buffer days in your trip.
  2. If you dive, bear in mind that the country's only hyperbaric chamber is in Puerto Cabezas, about 5 hours by speedboat from Corn Island, according to the United Kingdom.
  3. Little Corn has no cars, motorcycles, golf carts or airport, according to a lodging on the island (© 2017).

Safety and precautions

  • The United States advises travellers to reconsider travel (level 3, advisory reissued on 14 May 2026) due to crime, limited healthcare, wrongful detention and arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
  • According to the United States, Nicaragua has denied entry to or expelled US citizens, particularly people linked to NGOs, universities, churches or the media, and checks their social media.
  • Canada advises a high degree of caution throughout the country (update of 31 August 2026) due to the political situation, the potential for civil unrest and crime.
  • Spain advises extreme caution (update of 26 May 2026).
  • The United Kingdom has no resident embassy in Nicaragua and supports its citizens from San José (Costa Rica).
  • Nicaraguan law bars foreigners from any political activity: taking part in protests or spreading criticism, including on social media, can lead to detention or deportation, according to Canada and the United Kingdom.
  • Use authorised red-plate taxis or radio-dispatched taxis: the United Kingdom warns of express kidnappings in unauthorised taxis.
  • Canada warns that coastal waters can be dangerous, with frequent riptides, and that warning signs, lifeguards and rescue equipment are often limited. The United Kingdom says the country's only hyperbaric chamber is in Puerto Cabezas, about 5 hours by speedboat from Corn Island.
  • The Corn Islands are part of the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, according to INTUR: the US CDC recommends preventive malaria medication there, and Canada says healthcare workers are scarce in the Caribbean coast regions. Consult a healthcare professional before travelling.
