The Portobelo and San Lorenzo fortifications have been World Heritage since 1980 and remain on the Danger List. Several forts and the church are under restoration, and some parts are closed.

    Ruins of the first fort you see when driving into Portobelo, with batteries and cannons facing the bay. It is part of the fortifications inscribed as World Heritage in 1980 and on the Danger List since 2012.

    San Jerónimo Fort and Battery

    The only Portobelo fort inside the historic centre, facing the old pier next to the Royal Customs House. Engineer Ignacio Sala redesigned it in 1753.

    Closed to the public since the floods of 3 November 2025 flooded its interior. MiCultura is restoring it, with completion expected on 8 March 2027; reopening not confirmed by the official source at the time of review. The Royal Customs House, next to the fort, is the nearest visit. Santiago de la Gloria and San Fernando are also under works (expected completion 17 November 2026 and 12 March 2027, MiCultura): access during the works is not confirmed.

    Ruined fort and batteries on the north shore of the bay, across from the town. You reach it by boat; a trail continues from there to Puerto Francés beach.

    Current status unconfirmed: MiCultura is restoring the fort (780-day contract, expected completion 12 March 2027) and no information was found on visitor access during the works. Check with the boatmen or MiCultura before going.

    San Felipe Church and the Black Christ

    Church where the Nazarene, or Black Christ of Portobelo, a dark wooden image that draws thousands of pilgrims, is venerated. Visit Panamá lists a Congo Mass on the last Sunday of each month.

    Under full restoration (B/.12.2 million; 56% complete in September 2026). The church stays open: the Black Christ was moved to a space in the nave reached through a side entrance, and some areas are closed. MiCultura expects the façade to be ready by 21 October 2026 and the whole church by January 2027.

    Colonial chapel beside San Felipe Church that housed the Nazarene museum. It is part of the same MiCultura restoration project.

    The chapel's façade and roof have been restored, but in September 2026 the new museum, 'Hospitalitas Civitas', was still being fitted out. Opening date not confirmed by the official source at the time of review. Meanwhile, visit the Royal Customs House.
