Before you go,
understand the place.

West and north of the capital, the Ministry of Culture runs three archaeological parks: Joya de Cerén, a Late Classic village buried by an eruption and a World Heritage Site since 1993; San Andrés, with its acropolis; and Cihuatán, a city of about 300 hectares. All three open Tuesday to Sunday.

Best time to go
According to Spain’s climate section and Canada’s travel advisory, the rainy season generally runs from May to November. Canada places the Pacific hurricane season between mid-May and the end of November.
Getting there
San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez International Airport (SAL) is about 36 km from San Salvador. Immigration operates 24 hours a day (DGME). According to the press (29 September 2026), CEPA estimates about 45 minutes from the airport to the historic centre, a reference that varies with traffic, time of day and road conditions. The CEPA page consulted lists Inversiones Acopacific, Acacya de R.L. and Acobam de R.L. as authorised taxis. The CEPA page consulted does not list their fares. Uber picks up at the airport with a variable price shown in the app. Confirm the price before you set off.
