Before you go,
understand the place.

Suchitoto keeps cobbled streets, tiled roofs, galleries and cultural centres. Next to the town lies Lake Suchitlán, the reservoir of the Cerrón Grande plant, reached from Puerto San Juan.

Best time to go
According to Spain’s climate section and Canada’s travel advisory, the rainy season generally runs from May to November. Canada places the Pacific hurricane season between mid-May and the end of November.
Getting there
The official tourism portal places Suchitoto 47 km from the capital, and ISTU places Apastepeque Recreational Park 64 km away. By bus, the press gave route 129 from the Nuevo Amanecer terminal, in San Salvador, to Suchitoto (August 2025) and, for El Pital, route 119 from the Terminal de Oriente to San Ignacio and then route 509 up to the Río Chiquito area (December 2025). The bus journey described ends in Río Chiquito, not at the summit of El Pital; the onward journey must be arranged separately. The sources consulted do not confirm these routes’ current operation, fares or timetables. This guide does not calculate travel times or road routes.
