Barú (3,474 m) is Panama's highest point. From Boquete you go up a dirt track on foot or in an authorized 4x4; most people start at night to see the sunrise and, on clear days, both oceans.
Volcán Barú National Park admission in MiAmbiente's payment system (checked October 2026): foreign adult US$5; Panamanian adult US$3; under-12s free; the system does not distinguish the entry sector. Visit Panamá cites about US$5 for Barú in 2026. Some guides quote US$7, the 2020 rate that was suspended in 2022. Pay online on MiAmbiente's portal (reservasap.miambiente.gob.pa); check the accepted payment methods there. 4x4 ride with an operator: Boquete Outdoor Adventures lists US$128.40; its trips are subject to 7% ITBMS tax and it does not say whether that price includes it (checked October 2026).
Hours
Published official hours: 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (MiAmbiente, 2024). In practice, MiAmbiente describes in 2026 hikers going up from nightfall and 4x4s entering around 3:00 a.m.; since 28 February 2026 it has also allowed afternoon ascents for the sunset. Confirm current hours when you register.
Booking
MiAmbiente stated in June 2024 that park access required prior booking by email, and in February 2026 it describes online pre-registration for the authorized 4x4s that drive to the summit. The current booking procedure for hikers is unconfirmed: check with MiAmbiente before you go. Visit Panamá advises against climbing without a guide; reporting the July 2026 reopening, Newsroom Panama noted that tours need official authorization and recommended accredited guides, especially for the pre-dawn ascent. Capacity under the management plan: up to 15 vehicles with 75 passengers per shift and about 350 people at a time.
Time needed
About 13.5–14 km each way and 6–8 hours up (Visit Panamá, 2026). The full round trip is about 27 km. By 4x4: about 2 hours up and 2 down (operator).
Tip: Access closes for landslides and bad weather: it shut on 7 July 2026 after a slide at La Nevera (km 10) and reopened on 14 July. Bring a reusable bottle: single-use containers are banned. An operator warns the summit can drop below 0 °C before dawn.
The two routes to the Barú summit, Los Quetzales Trail and the cloud-forest trails around Boquete. Trails inside the national park require online registration and payment with MiAmbiente.
