Museums, cathedral
and Omoa

Two museums, San Pedro Sula's cathedral and a trip to Omoa, with its colonial fortress and its beach, to fill one or two days between the city and the coast

How to use this guide

This guide is for anyone passing through San Pedro Sula who wants to fill one or two days with history, a visit with children and a trip to the sea. There are two separate plans. In the city are the Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle, in the centre, the San Pedro Sula Museum of Anthropology and History and El Pequeño Sula Children's Museum, on Bulevar del Sur next to the Municipal Gymnasium. Outside, on the Cortés coast, Omoa has San Fernando de Omoa Fortress and the Omoa beaches, and needs a day of its own.

In the city, start with the cathedral, begun in 1949: it is built on a Latin-cross plan, with a central dome surrounded by paintings of the apostles. Carry on to the Museum of Anthropology and History, which opened its refurbished archaeology room in March 2026 and holds the alabaster Guatucanola Vessel. Both visits fit into a morning. If you are travelling with children, give the afternoon to El Pequeño Sula, with 12 permanent exhibits, the Jurassic Adventure Cave and a planetarium. Without children, you can skip it.

Omoa is for the second day. Go to the fortress first: it dates from the 18th century, has been a National Monument since 1987, and inside you walk through the cannon museum, the walls and the stone passageways. Its fees and hours are unconfirmed, so ask when you arrive. Keep the afternoon for the Municipal Beach, with calm water and restaurants serving Caribbean dishes. If you only have one day, stay in the city and leave Omoa for another trip.
