From Hopkins you can visit, by boat, Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, on the country’s southernmost atoll, run by the Fisheries Department.

Best time to go
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, although a cyclone can form outside that period (Government Press Office, 28 May 2026). The United Kingdom advises following warnings from the National Meteorological Service of Belize and the NEMO emergency agency. Canada places the rainy season from May to November, with flooding that can cut roads; the United Kingdom mentions flooded temporary bridges in the south, particularly in Stann Creek and Toledo.
Getting there
This guide does not calculate road routes or travel times and offers no arrival points. Flights arrive at Dangriga airstrip, which Tropic Air calls «Dangriga & Hopkins» and Maya Island Air «Dangriga (Hopkins)», on its website, last updated in February 2023. According to Visit Dangriga, buses run between Dangriga and Hopkins: from Dangriga, Monday to Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 5:15 p.m.; from Hopkins, Monday to Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Undated, unconfirmed times.

  1. 19 November is Garifuna Settlement Day, a national holiday. According to BelizeHub (Sep 2026), Dangriga hosts the largest celebrations and Hopkins has its own Yurumein, the dawn reenactment of the Garifuna arrival.
  2. Ask your operator whether the Glover’s Reef trip includes the reserve fee: the 1996 regulations set admission fees, but the amount was not read.
  3. Glover’s Reef has general use, conservation, wilderness and seasonal closure zones, each with its own rules; fish traps are banned in the general use zone, according to the Fisheries Department.

Safety and precautions

  • The United Kingdom reports injuries and deaths in activities such as snorkelling and diving, mainly through inadequate precautions and bad weather, and advises checking the forecast and using only registered and licensed operators.
